Pelvic Floor Therapy
Reclaim control with SAFE, PAINLESS, NONINVASIVE
AND NON- SURGICAL Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy.
If a patient has a pain syndrome alone or with prolapse or
incontinence, electrical stimulation may be used to help relax the pelvic floor
muscles. Also, the therapist can use her hands to help relax the pelvic floor
through advanced manual techniques such as massage and soft tissue
mobilization.
In addition, you will be given therapeutic exercises to
perform in the treatment session and at home to help progress the healing
process.
"It is our hope, that at the end of each session you
will come away being in less pain, more confident, more knowledgeable about
your body, and in more control over your body.”
Many women are embarrassed or afraid to discuss any
problem they have "down stairs,” "but in our practice no topics are "taboo”.
In our Pelvic Floor Therapy Practice, all topics and
concerns about women’s health matters are open for discussion.
Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy can play an important role in
providing care to women in a holistic, noninvasive and supportive manner for
disorders of the pelvic floor. Incontinence, and or prolapse are physical
disorders of the pelvic floor which can be treated and frequently cured with
the right medical intervention. As physical Therapists, it is part of our
mission to help our patients achieve their highest level of function, which
includes feeling like a whole woman without any pain, prolapses or
incontinence.
Our physical therapists are doctors of Physical Therapy whom
have gone on for further training in the evaluation and treatment of pelvic
floor muscle dysfunction. They use various modalities to help improve the
strength, endurance and coordination of the pelvic floor muscles which include
the use of electrical stimulation, biofeedback and manual techniques.
Treatment sessions last between 30-45 minutes in a private,
discreet and comfortable treatment room. Each patient is given an individualized
plan of care that is created in collaboration with the patient and physician
that includes components of strengthening, conditioning, core stabilization,
flexibility, behavior modification, pelvic floor training and retraining.
Patients are also given extensive education on healing
strategies and home exercise programs.
THE MOST COMMON DIAGNOSES TREATED BY OUR PHYSICAL
THERAPISTS ARE:
- Bladder
and bowel incontinence
- Urinary urgency and frequency
- Constipation
- Pelvic pain syndromes
- Sexual dysfunction
- Pre-pregnancy pain
- Rectal pain syndromes
- Vaginal
pain syndromes
HOW IT WORKS:
On the initial evaluation the physical therapist will use
her hands to determine the strength, and endurance and coordination of the internal
and external vaginal pelvic floor muscles.
If it is determined that electrical stimulation or
biofeedback is required, a computerized system is used that measures and
monitors the electrical activity of the pelvic floor muscles. This is done by
inserting a small probe (the size of a tampon) into the vagina or rectum to
detect the electrical activity of the pelvic floor muscles. Using this
"realtime” data from the computer patients can observe the electrical activity
of their muscles as they contract and relax them.
